John Lovejoy Elliot was the founder of Hudson Guild Settlement House and ethical society leader. Joel Elias Spingarn was a university professor, soldier, and civil rights leader. Spingarn was actively involved involved in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), becoming chair of the board in 1914.
