The Lewis collection includes a diverse assortment of materials that document the expanding role and status of women from the early nineteenth century until after women won the right to vote in 1920. Correspondence, conference programs, speeches, position papers, newsletters, sheet music, congressional reports, stock certificates, printed materials, and more present a view of the individuals and organizations that fought for and against political, economic, and social rights for women.

The records primarily document the American suffrage movement; but also include material on the suffrage movement in England and several other European countries, as well as a wide range of issues including education, organized labor, social welfare, temperance, voter education, slavery, wartime experiences, and the women’s club movement.

The collection contains just under 200 volumes, many of them rare, by English and American authors from the 19th to the mid-20th centuries. Authors include Jane Addams, Susan B. Anthony, Carrie Chapman Catt, Abigail Scott Dunaway, Amelia Earhart, Millicent Garrett Fawcett, Emmeline Pankhurst, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frances Willard, Victoria Woodhull, and many more influential reformers of the time. From works of fiction to fundraising cookbooks to personal accounts of the many social reform movements of the time, this collection provides an effective foundation to study the history of women’s equality in Europe and the United States.

My dear Sir: -- I have a glimmering recollection that your institute has the first three volumes of the History of Woman's Suffrage. If it has, will you not purchase Vol. IV to put by the side of them? As you will see, this book contains the summing up or the fruit of the seed sowing in the early years. I shall be very glad indeed if you can purchase the book to go with the first three volumes, or in case you haven't them, the whole set. My Life and Work too, as you may infer, is but another repetition of my connection with the Woman Suffrage movement. With greetings for the new year, I am
Sincerely yours, Susan B. Anthony

Dear Bessie
I have before me the announcement of your marriage to the young man you have so long and so tenderly loved - I am sure your dear mother looks down with approval – and your dear father too – how sad that both of those glorious beings have gone from you. I hope you will find in Mr. Dibble all that your fondest hopes have dreamed. I want to see you both - and hope when you come to Rochester you will call after us – just as your precious mother used to. I often think of your bereaved household – where is Maud - and your brother – and your adopted mother. I think of you all-
With the dearest love for you and your husband

Dear Friend: -- Women are fast taking their places in the industrial and professional world, at which fact I greatly rejoice. Are you not acquainted with some such women in your vicinity? Can you not explain to them that fifty years ago a few of us began fighting the battle, which as made it possible for them to stand where they now do? Will you not ask them to show their gratitude by contributing at least one dollar for our Association? With these dollars we can push the work still further till all women inside the home, as well as outside, shall be free to do as their consciences dictate, rather than as custom demands. Yours sincerely, Susan B. Anthony

My dear sister Lucy handed me your good letter on Sunday a.m. I reached home on Saturday at 10:00 p.m. and I was and am delighted that your good women are rousing to the plea of the young artist Miss Adelaide Johnson-to help her to the money to enable her to carry out her most earnest desire - that of putting into marble the two women = Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton= who called the first woman's rights convention for the dear girl has now resolved to made the trio-Mott, Stanton, Anthony-And I stopped in Philadelphia on my way home to get pictures and an old bust that will show the shape of the head-also a dress and cap of dear Mrs. Mott-so as to give Miss Johnson every possible aid-Of course I am glad the friends feel my work worthy of giving me a place by the side of Mrs. Stanton-but I am more glad that Mrs. Mott can be placed between us- or at the head of us-for she always stood by us-through all the years when we most needed friends-And I am sure you and all the dear friends will feel a renewed determination to help this cause with these object lessons at the Columbian Exposition-and help the brave young woman who unaided and alone started out to do the great work-she deserves our help and good cheer of all our friends. Lovingly yours, Susan B. Anthony"
