In 1916, the National Woman's Party chose to oppose all Democratic congressional candidates on the policy of "holding the party in power responsible" for failure to pass a federal suffrage amendment. President Wilson, who was seeking reelection, advocated for suffrage in New Jersey as a state action. The NWP responded vocally by sending organizers into 12 states to lobby against the Democratic Party candidates. Wilson was reelected in the 1916 elections.</text>
