Faux-ivory gavel with three sterling silver bands, and a turned rosewood handle and knop end. The display box originally sold with the gavel was missing at the time of purchase.
The engraved inscriptions on both flat hammer ends read: "Nat'l Woman Suffrage Ass'n March 25th 1888" and "Order is Heavens first Law."
This gavel is a replica of the one given to Susan B. Anthony at the first convention of the International Council of Women in Washington, D.C. from March 25th to April 1, 1888, which was assembled by Anthony and other leaders of the National Woman Suffrage Association. The original gavel is in the National Museum of American History.

The National Council of Women of the United States was founded in 1888 as a part of the International Council of Women, a new organization intended to establish connections between women's rights organizations across the world. May Wright Sewall was the second president of the National Council of Women of the United States, following Frances E. Willard.
In her address, Sewall discusses the Council's efforts on behalf of women to reform divorce laws and work for equal pay for equal work by the Government.

The International Council of Women, founded in 1888, was created during the second international conference of the National Woman Suffrage Association as a way to bring women from many countries together to work for women's issues.

<p style="text-align:left;">The Lewis collection includes a diverse assortment of materials that document the expanding role and status of women from the early nineteenth century until after women won the right to vote in 1920. Correspondence, conference programs, speeches, position papers, newsletters, sheet music, congressional reports, stock certificates, printed materials, and more present a view of the individuals and organizations that fought for and against political, economic, and social rights for women. <br /><br />The records primarily document the American suffrage movement; but also include material on the suffrage movement in England and several other European countries, as well as a wide range of issues including education, organized labor, social welfare, temperance, voter education, slavery, wartime experiences, and the women’s club movement.</p>
