Postcards and Stamps
Description
An account of the resource
The collection of more than 250 postcards and stamps demonstrates the popularity of this medium and the types of arguments both for and against suffrage. The cards illustrate the perceived threat to traditional gender roles, the growing violence of the suffrage movement primarily in England, and the way in which women were mobilizing to challenge conventional political and social responsibilities. The collection also includes a selection of printed photographic postcards distributed after the March 3, 1913 parade in Washington, D.C., as well as a series of photo cards published by the Women’s Social and Political Union and the Women’s Freedom League to highlight their officers.

You've got the vote and you think it's your mission,
To go to the polls like a bum politician
And while you are voting, your husband must roam
For something to eat which he can't find at home.
He's getting dyspepsia and can't work for pain,
Your children neglected, ask for you in vain.
While you make speeches from a broken soap box,
Your family is wearing soiled clothes and torn socks.

Description
An account of the resource
The author makes the argument against women's suffrage that in order to preserve and advance family life and happiness in the home, women should focus entirely on their work in the home and leave political participation to the wage-earning men.
"They love their own sphere in life, they feel their own adaptation to it, and fifty years of relentless agitation has not convinced them that participation in the duties which belong to men, would make them more honored, more useful, or happier."
