He lived in Brookline, Massachusetts and served as a selectman and moderator of Town Meetings for a number of years. He was a well-known abolitionist who used his house to shelter fugitive slaves. &#13;
Bowditch was also a supporter of women's rights. In this article, he reviews taxation laws in Massachusetts and their impact on women, and points to the injustice of taxing women without enfranchising them.</text>
