Postcards and Stamps
Description
An account of the resource
The collection of more than 250 postcards and stamps demonstrates the popularity of this medium and the types of arguments both for and against suffrage. The cards illustrate the perceived threat to traditional gender roles, the growing violence of the suffrage movement primarily in England, and the way in which women were mobilizing to challenge conventional political and social responsibilities. The collection also includes a selection of printed photographic postcards distributed after the March 3, 1913 parade in Washington, D.C., as well as a series of photo cards published by the Women’s Social and Political Union and the Women’s Freedom League to highlight their officers.

Description
An account of the resource
Postcard with photographic portrait of Lady Constance Lytton, Women's Social and Political Union, with the organization's address.
Constance Lytton joined the WSPU in 1908. She served four prison sentences. Born into an aristocratic family, Lytton was dismayed at the special treatment she received from the authorities owing to her family connections. When arrested in Liverpool while disguised as a working class woman 'Jane Warton', she was sentenced to hard labour and forcibly fed when going on hunger strike. This exposed the worse treatment to which working class prisoners were subject. Lytton later suffered a stroke owing to her prison experiences. (Museum of London)

Solicitation letter from Deborah K. Livingston, Chairman of the Campaign Committee of the Maine Woman Suffrage Association to Edward Merrill, Maine State Senator and a member of the executive committee of the Men's Equal Suffrage League, to fund the suffrage referendum campaign. In 1917, the Maine Suffrage Amendment was defeated by a vote of 40,000 to 20,000. In 1919, Maine became the third New England state to ratify the federal amendment and when a referendum vote was held, Maine women won the right to vote in presidential elections.
