The Lewis collection includes a diverse assortment of materials that document the expanding role and status of women from the early nineteenth century until after women won the right to vote in 1920. Correspondence, conference programs, speeches, position papers, newsletters, sheet music, congressional reports, stock certificates, printed materials, and more present a view of the individuals and organizations that fought for and against political, economic, and social rights for women.

The records primarily document the American suffrage movement; but also include material on the suffrage movement in England and several other European countries, as well as a wide range of issues including education, organized labor, social welfare, temperance, voter education, slavery, wartime experiences, and the women’s club movement.

Pledge to March donation form and advertisement for the May 1914 suffrage demonstration in Washington, D.C. Participants met at the Belasco Theatre for a meeting and then marched from Lafayette Square to the Capitol to present state suffrage resolutions to senators and representatives who introduced the resolutions in Congress.
The pledge form requests monetary donations and indicates that marchers should wear white. There is a typo on the form--it lists the time to meet at the Theatre as 12:30 a.m. instead of 12:30 p.m.

Description
An account of the resource
The Lewis collection includes approximately 60 buttons, pins, and badges issued in the United States or in England. Buttons were a popular way to demonstrate support or opposition for the woman’s suffrage movement, raise money, and spark conversation about the campaign. Supporters wore their buttons to proclaim popular and recognizable slogans like “Votes for Women” or “Suffrage First.” Buttons and badges displayed the names of organizations and the official colors, including gold and black, yellow and blue, purple, white and green, or some other variation to highlight a particular campaign.
The collection also includes several anti-suffrage buttons issued by groups such as the Massachusetts Association Opposed to the Further Extension of Suffrage to Women, and a small group of satirical buttons created by the American Tobacco Company.

The Suffragist was the official newspaper of the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage, later the National Woman's Party, from 1913 until 1921.Created to generate financial and public support for the federal suffrage amendment, the newspaper reported on the status of the suffrage amendment and state legislative activities.
It featured weekly political cartoons, many by artist Nina Allender, as well as regular features to highlight suffrage activities throughout the country, major events, and leaders. In 1917, when the NWP began picketing the White House, were arrested and put in jail, the newspaper served as a valuable tool to publicize the treatment of political prisoners.
