Subject

Women--Legal status, laws, etc.
Description
An account of the resource
The author reviews sections of the Constitution to make the argument that the individual articles and overall document should not be treated as gender specific. Men and women are equally interested in issues that impact them socially, economically, and politically, and should be able to utilize their unique perspectives to create an effective government.
Margaret Vater Longley was a journalist from Cincinnati, and active in the suffrage movement first in Cincinnati and later in California. She was a member of the executive committee of the National Woman Suffrage Association and later became vice president of the Ohio branch. She was also editor of the Dayton Woman's Advocate. When the family moved to California in 1885, Longley became the Vice President of the People's Party in California and spearheaded the Los Angeles Campaign Committee for a referendum on suffrage.

My dear Mrs. Wood,
Let me preface my letter by saying that we have all been terribly busy these two weeks with our melting pot, to which you were very generous. We have kept open shop on F Street displaying and selling our trinkets, and we have all turned shop keepers, so that our correspondence has been difficult to keep up. Mrs. Funk turned your first letter over to me. Then when I was in the office, looking for the information that you asked for, our secretary offered to hunt it up and write the letter. I don’t know how satisfactory her reply was, but we have very little literature here.
I can answer somewhat tardily one or two points, though I cannot give you the authority. Mrs. Funk uses in her speeches the fact that there were 864 dance halls connected with saloons in the city of Chicago alone. A month after the woman suffrage bill was passed practically all of these were closed. She also says that over 1000 saloons were closed in Chicago, and that as a result of the recent elections about two thirds of the State has gone dry.
However, she advises against hooking up suffrage with prohibition. She says don’t make much of the saloons. What is better suffrage propaganda is that in California the women’s votes have regulated the saloons “down to the ground” as she says.
I am afraid we haven’t been able to furnish you much help. If I had time I could do better, but I really haven’t. The summer has been pretty hot. I am dying to get away.
Sincerely,
Laura P. Morgan

The article refers to actions taken by the state legislatures on August 17, 1920. In North Carolina, the state legislature voted to defer consideration of the federal suffrage amendment until the General Assembly met in regular session in 1921. According to the article, anti-suffrage forces planned to bring the matter up under special order the following morning to get rid of it quickly. The article quotes Representative Neal, anti-suffrage floor leader, as saying "Call it up and kill it right."
In Tennessee, the lower House of the Tennessee legislature adjourned after three hours of debate with a final vote expected the following day. The article discusses the number of votes required to pass the amendment.
The article discusses National Woman's Party efforts to get Democratic Presidential nominee Governor Cox, of Ohio, to go to Nashville and exert his influence on the Tennessee Legislature to ratify the amendment.

Description
An account of the resource
The Lewis collection includes approximately 60 buttons, pins, and badges issued in the United States or in England. Buttons were a popular way to demonstrate support or opposition for the woman’s suffrage movement, raise money, and spark conversation about the campaign. Supporters wore their buttons to proclaim popular and recognizable slogans like “Votes for Women” or “Suffrage First.” Buttons and badges displayed the names of organizations and the official colors, including gold and black, yellow and blue, purple, white and green, or some other variation to highlight a particular campaign.
The collection also includes several anti-suffrage buttons issued by groups such as the Massachusetts Association Opposed to the Further Extension of Suffrage to Women, and a small group of satirical buttons created by the American Tobacco Company.
